Japan has the world’s oldest population, with 1 in 5 Japanese over the age of 65. It is very well established in retail services for the elderly, with an expected annual expenditure of S$1.1 trillion. South Korea’s elderly population makes up 11% of the total population, with both the government and private organisations rushing to provide housing and specialised consumer goods to this demographic. The trip to Tokyo and Seoul will form part of a series of visits in the Asia Pacific region that the LWC-S is undertaking. First-hand observations will be made regarding the ways that each country promotes age-friendly facilities, goods and policies to help the elderly.
